Ai WeiWei Explores the Refugee Crisis

Ai WeiWei is unquestionably one of the most important artistic voices to emerge in recent memory, and the contemporary art juggernaut has a powerful new exhibition on display in Prague.

Taking up the vast Trade Fair Palace, the National Gallery of Prague's collaboration with Ai WeiWei is entitled Law of the Journey, and is dedicated to the artist's exploration of the inescapable humanitarian refugee crisis that plagues the world at the moment.

Suspended from the ceiling, the exhibition's centerpiece is a massive black rubber boat, overloaded with crouched and huddling figures meant to represent the massive amounts of refugees currently seeking safety in various parts of the world. The boat takes up almost the entirety of the space, each of its black figures anonymized to drive home the point that everything but humanity falls away during a refugee crisis.

Speaking about his work, the artists said: "There is no refugee crisis, only human crisis. In dealing with refugees, we've lost our very basic values."
